Incontinence refers to the adult’s inability to control urine or feces (stool). The disorder is common in elderly as well as patients who are ill or disabled. Incontinence affects about 1 in 5 adults with women being more affected than men.
Many adults are embarrassed as well as frustrated at being wet all the time. The problem can also be bothersome to the patient’s caregiver. Incontinence bed pads are used by such patients to help them manage their problem. The patients and their caregiver prefer using incontinence pads as it helps protect bedding and maintains the dignity of the patients. Many times the caregivers also have difficulty pulling up the patients and changing their beddings and adult diapers. The incontinence pads make it easy for the caregivers to put on and off the patients as well as clean them.
Sizes and Styles:
The incontinence pads come in a variety of sizes and styles.
There are many types and size available in the market for incontinence today. They are available in the disposable or washable style.
Disposable bed pads: The material used for the bed pads is the same as disposable pads. The waterproof backing has an absorbent layer on top with a stay dry layer on the outside. The disposable bed pads are smaller in size than the reusable style and should be used with a waterproof mattress protector to protect the bedding.
Reusable bed pads: This type of bed pad is usually made with the following materials:
• Bird’s eye: Made from 100 % cotton, has a low life expectancy but is the most economical.
• Ibex: Made by combining 80% cotton and 20% polyester.
• Tricot: made from 100% brushed polyester. The most popular style of bed pad due to its softness and comfort even if the skin is in direct contact with the pad.
Bed pads are designed to soak up urine. Different bed pads have different soaking capacities. They are commonly available in 6, 8, and 10 ounces of soaking cloth per square yard. The soaker cloth is stitched under the top most layer and helps keep moisture away from the person. The under pads that have a higher value of rayon in the soaker will be more absorbent. Those who have heavy incontinence should use the heavy soaker bed pad.
Some bed pads also come with wings which you can stick to the side of the mattress to firmly hold it in place. It is also advisable to use the bed pads with waterproof mattress protector to protect the mattress. Urine can stain the mattress and also contribute to bacteria growth on the mattress.
Both washable and reusable type of bed pads are easy to maintain and will significantly reduce the amount of cleaning the caregiver has to do.
